Outsourcing in India – A Privacy Law Perspective

Over the past decade the Information Technology-Business Process Outsourcing (“IT-BPO”) industry has been the most robust and rapidly developing industry in India. In the recent past, the aggregated revenue for the IT-BPO sector crossed US Dollars 100 billion, and is expected to touch US Dollars 118 billion in FY- 2014 growing at a rate of 8.8 % over FY-2013. The outsourcing sector continued as one of the largest private employers in the country; directly employing nearly 3.1 million professionals and providing indirect employment to an additional 10 million. As a proportion of national GDP, the sector revenues have grown from 1.2 % in FY-1998 to over 8.1 % in FY-2014. Notably, in 2013 India accounted for over 90 % of the incremental growth of the global IT-BPO sector, and in the process increased its global market share from 52 % in 2012 to 55 % in 2013. Therefore, notwithstanding the competition posed by other countries, India has succeeded in retaining its position as the world’s most preferred outsourcing destination.
